What Are Mutations? Golden, Rainbow, and Shocked Explained
Mutations are special visual and value modifiers that can appear on pets and crops in Grow a Garden. They are one of the most important concepts to understand for trading because a mutation can multiply an item's value by 20x, 50x, or even 100x.
The Three Mutation Types
Golden (20x Multiplier)
The Golden mutation gives a pet or crop a shimmering gold appearance. It is the most common of the three mutations but still rare enough to dramatically increase value. A Common pet worth 50 S becomes worth 1,000 S with Golden. A Legendary pet worth 4,000 S becomes worth 80,000 S — enough to trade for multiple high-tier pets.
Rainbow (50x Multiplier)
The Rainbow mutation cycles through the color spectrum, creating a mesmerizing visual effect that makes affected items stand out immediately. With a 50x multiplier, a Rainbow mutation can turn even a Common pet into something worth serious trade value. A Common Dog at 50 S becomes 2,500 S — equivalent to a lower Legendary pet. This is the sweet spot where mutations become genuinely game-changing for a player's trade portfolio.
Shocked (100x Multiplier)
The Shocked mutation is the rarest and most valuable of all mutations, featuring crackling electric effects that surround the item. At a 100x multiplier, a Shocked mutation on any pet — even a Common one — makes it one of the most valuable items in the game. A Shocked Dog is worth 5,000 S, rivaling Legendary pets. A Shocked Legendary or Mythical pet is worth more than many Divine pets and can anchor the most high-stakes trades in the game.
How to Get Mutations
Mutations are not guaranteed — they are random events that can occur when hatching eggs or harvesting crops. The exact probabilities are not officially documented by the developers. Based on community reports, Golden is the most accessible of the three mutations — though still uncommon — Rainbow is significantly rarer, and Shocked is extraordinarily rare. Many dedicated players have completed thousands of hatches without a single Shocked. Mutation potions, which can be crafted or obtained from events, offer a way to apply mutations intentionally, though these potions themselves are highly valuable trade items.
Trading with Mutations
When trading mutated items, always use a calculator. The math is simple — base value times the mutation multiplier — but it is easy to make mistakes in the heat of negotiation. A Golden pet is worth 20 normal versions of itself. A Shocked pet is worth 100. If someone tries to trade you a Golden Uncommon for your Legendary, run the numbers before accepting. Also, be aware that some traders may try to pass off a mutation that does not exist on the item. Always verify the mutation is visible on the item in the trade window before confirming.
Mutation Verification
Our mutation multipliers are verified against the live game and the official Grow a Garden wiki on a monthly basis. After major game updates, we re-verify within 48 hours. If you notice that a multiplier seems incorrect, please report it through our contact form so we can investigate and update our data.
