How to Spot a Scam Trade in Grow a Garden

Garden Trade Team·May 9, 2026

Trading scams are unfortunately common in Grow a Garden, especially targeting newer players who are still learning the value system. This guide covers the most common scam types and how to protect yourself. Remember: if a trade feels wrong, walk away. No pet is worth losing your entire collection.

The Trust Trade Scam

This is the most common scam in Grow a Garden. A player asks you to trade them an item first with the promise that they will trade something better back later. They might say things like "I need to check the weight" or "Let me see if it has a hidden mutation." Once they have your item, they leave the server or block you. There is no legitimate reason for anyone to ask you to trade an item first without giving you something of equal value in return. If someone suggests a trust trade, report them to server moderators and walk away.

The Fake Mutation Scam

Scammers may claim their pet has a mutation that it does not actually have. They might say "this Dog is Rainbow, trust me, it just does not show in the trade window" or "the mutation is hidden because of a bug." This is never true. Mutations are always visible in the trade window. Golden pets shimmer gold, Rainbow pets cycle through colors, and Shocked pets have electric effects. If you cannot see the visual effect, the mutation does not exist. Do not take anyone's word for it.

The Value Misdirection Scam

A trader claims their Common pet is worth far more than it actually is because "it is going up fast" or "everyone is looking for this right now" or "I saw it traded for 10,000 S yesterday." They are trying to create false urgency and FOMO. Always check a value list (like ours) before trading. If someone is making claims about a pet's value that do not match community consensus, they are either misinformed or deliberately trying to scam you.

The Swap Scam

In the middle of a trade negotiation, a scammer quickly swaps out a valuable item for a similar-looking but much less valuable one. For example, they display a high-value Legendary pet in the trade window, then while chatting they swap it for a Common pet with a similar icon. They distract you with conversation and hope you do not notice the swap before confirming. Always double-check every item in the trade window before confirming. Read the names and rarities carefully — do not rush.

The "Duplicate Glitch" Scam

A scammer claims they know how to duplicate pets through a glitch and offers to duplicate your rarest pet. They say you need to trade the pet to them so they can perform the glitch. After they receive your pet, they leave. There is no legitimate duplication glitch in Grow a Garden, and even if there were, using exploits violates the game's terms of service and can get your account banned. Anyone offering to duplicate items is a scammer.

The Impersonation Scam

A scammer creates a Discord account with a name and profile picture very similar to a well-known trusted trader or server moderator. They then approach players with trade offers, hoping the familiarity disarms suspicion. Always check the exact username (including the Discord tag and any special characters) of the person you are trading with. Most reputable Discord servers have verified roles for their moderators and trusted traders — look for those verification badges.

How to Protect Yourself

  • Use a value calculator — Always run the numbers before accepting any trade.
  • Take your time — Scammers rush you. Legitimate traders are patient.
  • Verify items in the trade window — Read names, rarities, and visually confirm mutations.
  • Use middleman services — Some Discord servers offer trusted middlemen for high-value trades. Use them.
  • Record your trades — Screenshots or video recordings provide evidence if you need to report a scam.
  • Trust your instincts — If something feels off, it probably is. Cancel the trade and walk away.

What to Do If You Get Scammed

If you have been scammed, take these steps immediately: (1) Screenshot all chat logs and the trade window showing the scam. (2) Report the user to the Discord server moderators with your evidence. (3) Block the scammer to prevent further contact. (4) If the scam involved a large value, consider reporting it to Roblox through their support system. While recovery is unlikely, reporting helps moderators ban scammers and prevent future victims. Do not try to "scam them back" — this just puts you at risk of being banned yourself.
